Ask Joe — Carving Videos

Ask Joe on WOM — Free Video Instruction

JoeDI haven’t written an Ask Joe article since I retired from the business of carving about 6 years ago. Since retirement I carve and do other forms of art for my enjoyment.

In October 2013 I traveled to Jackson Hole, WY, to teach woodcarving to wounded veterans. It is because of these classes and the need for beginners to get instructions on woodcarving, that I made some instructional videos. In the future I plan on making more videos as needed.

Recently I discussed, with Matt Kelly (owner and editor of WOM),  about making these videos available through WOM. There are 19 woodcarving videos so far. To view or download the videos, just click HERE. then click on Woodcarving at the top of the front page. You will find four videos are on sharpening; a couple on the basics of carving and a number on various projects.

If you view the videos, I would love to hear your comments and suggestions for future videos jdillett@thecarvingshop.net .

Enjoy the journey of woodcarving,

Joe Dillett, The Carving Shop

Editor’s Note — Links to Joe’s videos may also be found in the Resource Files, under Video Files.  Click The Files in the menu bar at the top of the page, then Video Files in the drop down menu.

New Resource File — The Video Files

With the increasing popularity of web-based video, such as YouTube, Vimeo and Shutterfly, we have seen an increase in free and for-fee carving videos, some self-produced and some professionally produced.  What the self-produced videos may lack in camera work and editing is often more then offset by the quality of the instruction and low/no cost.

In recognition of this growing instructional resource, a new curated section for videos has been added to the Woodcarver Resource Files.  To visit this new resource,  click The Files in the menu bar at the top of the page, then Video Files in the resulting drop down menu.

Once there, you will find a few initial resources, and a form to suggest your favorite video for inclusion in the collection.   With your help, we can make this a most robust collection of links to quality instruction videos.
