Hello carving friends - That good looking sod just to the left is my long-time friend and WOM contributor "Ol' Don" Burgdorf. That plaque he is holding is the 2010 Ron Ryan Award. This award is given annually at the Dayton Carvers Guild Artistry in Wood annual show. The plaque reads: Don Burgdorf, who exemplifies the ideals of giving of oneself, expressing goodwill and exerting the extra effort needed to promote woodcarving throughout the carving world. Past recipients have included folks whose names you will recognize, such as Chip Chats editor Ed Gallenstein, Ray Kunz, Larry "Big Dog" Yudis, Bruce Henn, Joe Wannamaker, Tom Brown, Wayne Barton, Jack A. Williams Bob Guge and Don Mertz. Congratulation Ol' Friend for a well-deserved award!
We've wrapping up 2010 with another great issue for you here - starting with the Annual Santa Gallery. Once again we have some great Santas to inspire your next carving. Well, the WOM Mint Tin Carving Contest is history. I lugged all of the submissions down to Artistry in Wood, where they were judged by a crack four person team of judges. And the winners are . . . going to be announced in Part II of this issue of WOM. (Sorry folks - still have some photos to shoot and prepare for the article!)
