This past July Ted Richmond, a nationally recognized fish carver and Kansas City resident, came up with a wonderful idea for the on-line Yahoo Fishcarving group.
Ted's idea was to have a group project, and at the projects conclusion to auction the carving and donate the proceeds to a worthy cause. The group decided to carve a Rainbow Trout, and selected Trout Unlimited as the one to auction off the carving, and receive the proceeds.
Thirteen carvers from around the country volunteered to participate. Each carver completed one part of the project, and then forwarded it on to the next carver. To start the ball rolling Ted drew up the design, and cut out the blank. Since then the carving has traveled from Maine to Oregon, and will be auctioned off in Kansas City in February. The project has brought the group closer together, and provided mountains of new information.
Each participating carver took photos of his part, along with notes on the methods, and techniques used on each step of the carving process. This information was then shared with all of the group members, who have an opportunity to ask questions.
Ted is writing articles about our project which
will be published in Woodcarving Magazine and the Trout
Unlimited pubications. You can see more of the steps in our
