Hel­lo, Friends in Carving -

The Christ­mas sea­son is almost upon us, but there is still plen­ty of time to do some carv­ings for gifts or sea­son­al orna­ments.   Lots of ideas in this issue for San­tas and oth­er orna­ments if you are look­ing for ideas.

Artistry in Wood, the annu­al two day carv­ing show host­ed by the Day­ton Carvers Guild was anoth­er won­der­ful event.  I ‘m hap­py I was able to chat with some of you there this year.   It’s a great show, and one that should be on your cal­en­dar to attend.  We’ll have some pho­tos from the 2013 show in the January/February issue of WOM; but in the mean­time, this issue con­tains addi­tion­al can­did pho­tos from the 2012 event, pro­vid­ed by “Ol’ Don” and Sandie Burgdorf.

Step-by-Step Santa From A Basswood Log

Randy George shares his step-by-step pho­tos of his carv­ing of a large San­ta face.

The carv­ing start­ed out as half of a bass­wood log. George roughed out with mal­let tools and fin­ished with hand tools. The carv­ing mea­sures 13″ long by 7 1/2″ wide and 5″ thick. It was paint­ed using acrylic wash­es and sealed with a light coat of Deft lac­quer.   Vis­it Randy George’s blog here:  george­wood­carv­ing.

“Ol’ Don” Burgdorf is a carv­er and artist from Hohen­wald, TN. Don’s fea­ture “Doo­dles ‘n Notes for Carvin’ Folks” appears reg­u­lar­ly in Chip Chats, and his pat­terns are now found in each issue of WOM and Carv­ing Mag­a­zine. He has sev­er­al pat­tern port­fo­lios on a vari­ety of sub­jects avail­able for down­load from his web­site.
